Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty

I thought about writing a blog based on the organization created to enhance and encourage the use of locally grown produce and locally produced wine and cheeses.  As I started to research the group for more information, it appears that everything is at a standstill since the death of acclaimed local chef and winery owner Deb Whiting.  She died from a horrible car accident, but shortly before she left this world, she was chosen to star in a TV role on the Food Network “Chopped”.  Deb did not make it to the end, but was able to showcase her talents, if only briefly.   So now what to do ?

Well, the Finger Lakes is a great area to raise more than just grapes to produce award-winning wines.  Just take a drive around Keuka Lake and you will find farms producing everything from soybeans to green beans, from wheat to buckwheat, from tomatoes to raspberries.  I am not intentionally leaving any one product out, it’s just that you can find just about every vegetable and many fruits.  Some farms are specific to what they grow.  You will find blueberry farms, apple and cherry orchards and of course farmers that just supply grapes to both large and small wine makers.

These farms create a very colorful landscape dotted with old and new barns, animals and homes.

I decided to continue on and remembered the mouth-watering magazine called “Edible Finger Lakes”. It is complete with photos, recipes and information about local growers.

If you drive around the countryside right now, you will find the blue tubes running fromvmaple  tree to maple  tree, ready to collect the sweet sap that will then be boiled into maple syrup.

You can create entire menus just from the foods and products produced locally.  Many of the fine restaurants in the area promote their use of local products meaning an ever changing menu.

So come visit the Finger Lakes and if you decide to stay and would like to look for a home or maybe even a small farm, winery or lakefront home, I am ready to work for you !
