Last year was a record fail on Keuka Lake when it comes to ice, it never came. This year because of the hiatus last year, the ice fishermen and women were biting at the bit to get out there with the first signs of ice. When the ice came, it spread fast, causing a whole new frenzy of activities. They were back ( including me). They came out to fish (mostly), they cleared patches of snow on the ice to ice skate, they came out to walk and like me they brought their dogs out on the ice, so that they could run around freely without the worry of cars.
Ice fishing is an entire subset of fishing. Some folks will only ice fish. Keuka Lake is not like some of the other winter areas where the lakes freeze for the entire season and complete villages pop up. But it does enjoy the portable fishing life with the colorful little huts, red and orange flags from the pop ups and colorful sleds to pull the gear around.
You will see people out on the ice with augers ( they drill a hole in the ice ) both manual and gas-fired. That is where they will drop their lines in to catch fish. Some folks will sit out in the sun on lawn chairs and others will bring their cute little pop-up tents that will protect them from the elements.
The colors of the apparatus brightens up the grayness of the day.
Sometimes the fishermen and women are successful and can go home with the night’s dinner.
If you would like to find your vacation/get-a-way home to enjoy both Summer and Winter activities, just contact me via email, text or phone. I look forward to hearing from you. Now off to see what is going on, on Keuka Lake !
You will most likely run into someone you know, yes even on the ice !
