Driving from a client’s property near Hammondsport on Keuka Lake, I felt compelled to stop and take some photos. I should have stopped more but had to get to another appointment. As I looked at the photos, it reminded me of the reasons that have made the Finger Lakes area such a destination area in the Fall. Folks come from near and far for the fall colors and views and of course the wine trails. As you drive down the road on a nice warm day with the windows open, the aromas of the vineyards take over your senses. The visual experience is just as powerful. It becomes difficult to not stop…you become compelled to stop and saturate your senses. The colors, the smell, the contrast of the bright blue skies against the autumnal colors in the horizon are all there for you to capture if only in your mind.
Of course with the beauty comes the sadness. It is difficult to see the boats and docks being pulled out of the water and put away. But this time of the year does allow for great photos because many of the boats are not on the water. The waters are calm and the views relaxing. You can hear the sounds of the birds and the water gently rippling against the shore.
This is a great time to be driving around the lakes and leaf peeping. The summer crowds are gone, many of the seasonal homes are closed up, leaving the roadways free and clear to take your time on the roads without traffic. You will find many places to pull over but my suggestion is to stop at one of the numerous wineries that sit high on the hill that serve lunch. From there you can savor the local flavors of the region and enjoy the views. Bully Hill Winery is one of the wineries that serve lunch and offer you the ambiance of the Finger Lakes experience.
If you live within an hours drive, you can make this a wonderful day trip and if your travel is from a farther origination, then you can take advantage of the reduced rental rates at most of the lakefront rental. Even better yet, make it a fun weekend to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the Finger Lakes.
Many of my real estate clients decided to make this area their second home and have purchased their own lakefront property. So fall into the finger lakes and contact me when you decide to make it yours…
